Identity Confirmed: Brishty Khatun Revealed as Journalist Killed in Bailey Road Fire

Amidst the tragic aftermath of the devastating fire that occurred on February 29 at the seven-storey Green Cozy Centre on Bailey Road, a sense of confusion arose regarding the identity of one of the victims. The female journalist, who initially used a pen name, has now been confirmed by the police as Brishty Khatun.

Following extensive investigations, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) disclosed on Sunday that DNA samples collected from the victim’s parents – Sabuj Sheikh alias Shablul Alam and Beauty Khatun – matched with those of Brishty. The breakthrough came as a relief to many who were grappling with uncertainty over her true identity.

A student of the Philosophy Department at Eden College in the capital, Brishty was among the 46 individuals who tragically lost their lives in the fire. The incident took place during a gathering where most attendees had come for dinner with friends and relatives.

Initially identified by friends and former colleagues as Ovisruti Shastri, Brishty’s parents consistently maintained that she was indeed their daughter. The discrepancy in names, with Ovisruti Shastri representing a Hindu identity and her parents being Muslims, added to the confusion surrounding her identity.

After 11 days of collecting DNA samples, her true identity as Brishty Khatun was finally confirmed. Hailing from the Bongram village in Khoksha Upazila of Kushtia, Brishty was a former reporter at TheReport.live. Her birth registration, college certificate, and National ID (NID) all bear her name as Brishti Khatun, solidifying her true identity.

Deputy Inspector General AKM Nahidul Islam of CID revealed that the DNA match was detected on Saturday, providing closure to the ongoing investigation into the fire incident. The next steps in the case will be determined by the investigation officer, who will act upon this crucial development.

Despite the confirmation of Brishty’s identity, Ramna police station Officer-in-Charge Utpal Barua stated that the CID had not yet informed them of the latest findings. However, he assured that once the DNAs matched, her body would be rightfully handed over to her grieving family.

As Brishty’s parents eagerly await the return of their daughter’s remains, they expressed their hopes of receiving closure and bringing her home. The heartbreaking loss of Brishty Khatun serves as a stark reminder of the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful day at Bailey Road.
