Tragic Incident at Teton Mesa Apartments in Idaho Falls

Last night in Idaho Falls, a tragic incident unfolded at the Teton Mesa Apartments on Lomax Street. The Idaho Falls Police SWAT team was called in to respond to a distressing situation where two individuals had been shot, and one person had lost their life.

911 Call Reporting Burglary in Progress

Shortly before 9:00 p.m. on March 9, 2024, the Idaho Falls 911 Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a burglary in progress at a residence in the 100 block of 4th Street. The caller indicated that a person had entered the residence and that two individuals had been shot in the process.

Police Response and Life-Saving Efforts

Idaho Falls Police Officers swiftly arrived at the scene and found two adult male victims with gunshot wounds. Immediate life-saving first aid was administered by the officers and continued by EMS from Idaho Falls Fire upon their arrival. Both victims were then rushed to a local hospital for further treatment, unfortunately, one victim did not survive.

Suspect Identified and Barricaded

Through thorough investigation, the Idaho Falls Police Officers were able to identify and locate the suspect in an apartment at the Teton Mesa Apartments on Lomax Street around 11 p.m. The suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment and refused to comply with officers’ instructions to surrender.

SWAT Team Intervention and Arrest

With the situation escalating, the Idaho Falls Police SWAT Team was called in. Neighboring residents were evacuated as a precaution. The SWAT Team used CS gas to enter the residence, leading to the suspect’s surrender and subsequent arrest around 1:00 a.m.

Additional Arrest and Charges Pending

Another individual, Blanca Lopez, was also taken into custody on pre-existing Bonneville County Warrants after being spotted leaving the apartment and attempting to hide in another unit. The main suspect, identified as 23-year-old Lance Broncho, sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound during the initial incident and is now in custody on federal warrants. He is expected to face charges related to homicide once the investigation is complete.

Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat related to this incident. The Idaho State Police, Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, and Chaplains of Idaho all played vital roles in responding to the situation.
