Tragic Discovery in Kalabakan: Man Found Dead After Crocodile Attack

Located in the southeastern part of Sabah, Kalabakan is a small town known for its rich wildlife and natural beauty. Unfortunately, this peaceful setting turned into a scene of tragedy when a 57-year-old man, Asmadi Harun, went missing while searching for clams with his family in Sungai Kalabakan.

The incident took a devastating turn when Asmadi was found dead early the next morning, believed to have been attacked by a crocodile. The news sent shockwaves through the community, as such incidents are rare in this serene part of Malaysia.

Tawau Fire and Rescue Station chief Jemishin Ujin shared the heartbreaking news, stating that Asmadi’s body was discovered at 4.30 am by villagers from Kampung Sungai Ulu Kalabakan. The location of the discovery, about 500 metres from where Asmadi was last seen, painted a grim picture of the tragic events that unfolded.

Efforts to locate Asmadi involved a search operation carried out by the villagers, who scoured the waters of Sungai Ulu Kalabakan in three boats. The sense of urgency and solidarity among the locals was palpable as they worked tirelessly to find their missing neighbour.

Despite their best efforts, the search ended tragically at 10.45 am, with Asmadi’s body being handed over to the police for further investigation. The loss of a community member in such a sudden and violent manner left a sombre atmosphere hanging over Kalabakan.

As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Asmadi’s death, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in the idyllic waters of Sungai Kalabakan. The people of Kalabakan mourn the loss of one of their own, a reminder of the fragile balance between man and nature in this untamed corner of Malaysia.
