Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Search for Missing Fisherman off Pulau Pemanggil Continues

Located near Mersing, Pulau Pemanggil is a picturesque island known for its crystal-clear waters and abundant marine life. It was here that a 32-year-old fisherman, Sufian Alwi, went missing after falling overboard from a fishing boat while tugging the fishing net.

The Incident

The unfortunate incident took place at 4.10pm on Friday, March 8, as Sufian and his fellow crew members were finishing up their fishing activities. Sufian, who was last seen wearing green shorts and no shirt, suddenly disappeared into the ocean just 3.3 nautical miles northwest of Pulau Pemanggil.

The Search and Rescue Operation

As soon as the Johor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) received the report, a search and rescue operation was promptly activated at 5pm. The second day of the operation saw the participation of the marine police, the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Fisheries Department, Mersing Fishermen Association, and the local fishing community.

The Efforts

Coordinated by the Johor Baru Maritime Rescue SubCentre (MRSC), the search area was divided into four sectors covering a total of 74 nautical square miles. Despite the challenges posed by the vast ocean, the search teams remained determined to locate Sufian and bring him back to safety.

A Call for Safety

First Admiral Nurul Hizam Zakaria emphasised the importance of prioritising safety, especially when venturing out to sea. He advised all fishing communities to exercise caution and to avoid fishing activities during adverse weather conditions. By taking precautions, such as wearing life jackets and staying informed about weather forecasts, fishermen can reduce the risk of accidents at sea.

As the search for Sufian continues, the maritime authorities and local community remain hopeful for a positive outcome. The waters off Pulau Pemanggil may be vast, but the spirit of solidarity and cooperation among the search teams serves as a beacon of hope in the face of adversity.
