Man Arrested for Impersonating Peace Officer
A Riverside County man has been taken into custody on suspicion of impersonating a peace officer after allegedly conducting unlawful traffic stops in Canyon Lake.
Incident Details
According to a news release from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, reports came in about a man pulling over vehicles in Canyon Lake while driving a vehicle resembling a police patrol sedan. Surveillance footage captured a white Crown Victoria sedan equipped with emergency lights on the roof conducting a traffic stop.
The suspect reportedly presented a badge to a victim that read “agent” and “California” during the incident.
Suspect Identified
After an investigation, deputies located and arrested the individual, identified as 70-year-old Canyon Lake resident Steven Sawhill. Upon apprehension, fraudulent identification cards and a badge were discovered in his possession. Sawhill now faces charges of impersonating a peace officer, false imprisonment, and vehicle code violations related to the illegal possession of emergency lights.
