Tragic boat capsizing in Sungai Batang Baleh, Kapit division
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a longboat capsized in Sungai Batang Baleh in Kapit division, resulting in the disappearance of four individuals. The search operation, which commenced immediately, has led to the discovery of three bodies, bringing some closure to this devastating incident.
Search operation yields somber results
The Kapit Fire and Rescue Station chief, Timothy Barat, reported that two of the victims have been identified as Sgt Jonathan Lambert, 51, and Jack Balan, 45. Sgt Jonathan’s body was found near the Kapit express boat terminal, while Jack Balan was discovered in the waters of Pulau Kerto, Sibu, over 100km away from the site of the capsizing.
Another body was found by the public near Bintangor but drifted away and was eventually located in Batang Lebaan, nearly 200km from the initial incident location. Despite the efforts of the search teams, one victim still remains unaccounted for, leaving a sense of unease and uncertainty.
A community in mourning
The community has been deeply affected by this tragic event, with five individuals aboard the ill-fated boat. The two police personnel from the Kapit district police headquarters, Sgt Jonathan Lambet, and Constable Iskandar Ibrahim, along with civilians Amerson John Nain, Jack Balan, and Moses Ngui, were all impacted by the capsizing.
While Moses Ngui was fortunate enough to be rescued by members of the public, the loss of the other individuals has left a void in the hearts of their loved ones. The search operation continues tirelessly in the hopes of finding the remaining victim and providing closure to the grieving families.
