Three People Charged in Connection with Incidents at Demonstration Outside Vaughan Synagogue

York Regional Police have laid charges against three individuals following three separate incidents that occurred during a demonstration outside a synagogue in Vaughan, just east of Bathurst Street.

Protesters Gather on Clark Avenue

The demonstration took place on Clark Avenue, where pro-Palestinian protesters and pro-Israel counter-protesters lined up on opposite sides of the street. Police were present to maintain order and prevent any clashes between the two groups.

Arrests Made During the Demonstration

Police provided an update on the arrests made during the demonstration. Kevin Haas, a 40-year-old man from Markham, was taken into custody after officers observed him allegedly carrying a knife. He has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Another incident involved a protester, Meir Greichter, who allegedly assaulted a woman. He was immediately arrested and charged with assault. Additionally, a verbal altercation between a man and a woman escalated when the woman threatened to spray a coyote repellent at the man. Ina Sandler, a 48-year-old woman, was charged with possessing a dangerous weapon and assault with a weapon.

Hate Crime Prevention Unit Engaged

The hate crime prevention unit has been engaged in the investigation, with police emphasizing that they take incidents of hate crimes seriously and will not tolerate any form of hate crime. They have assured the public that all reports of hate crime or hate/bias incidents will be thoroughly investigated.

Background of the Demonstration

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators were protesting an event at the synagogue that they claimed promoted real estate purchases in the West Bank, a territory captured by Israel in 1967. However, organizers of the event denied these claims. The international community, including Canada, considers Israeli settlements in the West Bank to be illegal.
