Man Arrested for $700,000 Scam at Michigan Casino
In a surprising turn of events, a man has been arrested for allegedly scamming $700,000 out of a Michigan casino by impersonating the tribal chairperson. The incident took place at the Four Winds Casino in Hartford, Michigan, which is owned and operated by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians.
Details of the Scam
On July 30, 2023, the Four Winds Casino received a call from an individual claiming to be the tribal chairperson. This person demanded $700,000 in cash for an urgent payment. Unfortunately, a supervisory employee at the casino fell for the scam and handed over the money to the caller.
The employee then took the cash to a gas station in Gary, Indiana, as instructed by the caller, and gave it to two unknown individuals. It was later discovered that Jesus Gaytan-Garcia was one of those individuals involved in the heist.
Investigation and Arrest
Following a thorough investigation by the FBI and Pokagon Tribal Police, Gaytan-Garcia was apprehended. A search of his home revealed a bundle of cash wrapped in a paper band bearing the casino’s name and the date of the alleged theft.
Pokagon Tribal Police Chief Mario RedLegs commended the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, stating, “The arrest of Mr. Gaytan-Garcia demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between the Pokagon Tribal Police and the FBI.”
