Deadly Shooting in Saint Michael, Minnesota

Last weekend, a tragic incident unfolded in Saint Michael, Minnesota, resulting in the death of 67-year-old Jeffrey Chapman of Albertville. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has revealed that Chapman was shot and killed by Wright County Sheriff’s Deputy Austin Feenstra, a law enforcement officer with about 10 months of experience.

Details of the Incident

The fatal shooting took place following a traffic stop in a residential area near the Saint Michael Middle School. Deputy Feenstra initiated the stop after observing Chapman’s erratic driving behaviour, including weaving and sudden accelerations. Chapman, upon stopping his vehicle, approached the deputy despite verbal commands to stop.

According to the BCA report, Chapman continued to advance towards Feenstra, even pulling out a metal pipe from his waistband. In response, the deputy fired multiple shots, fatally wounding Chapman. The investigation recovered spent shell casings from the deputy’s firearm and the 9-inch metal pipe at the scene.

It is noted that the Wright County Sheriff’s Office does not have body cameras. However, a squad car camera captured portions of the incident, providing valuable evidence for the ongoing investigation. Once completed, the BCA will present its findings to the Wright County Attorney’s Office for review.
