Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Shocking Incident Unfolds in Ashtabula, Ohio

Two roommates, Loreen B. Feralo, 55, and Karen Kasbohm, 63, were charged with abusing a corpse after a disturbing incident in Ashtabula, Ohio. The pair discovered the lifeless body of a man on Monday and decided to take advantage of the situation by propping up his body in the front seat of his car to withdraw money from his bank account.

Chief Robert B. Stell of the Ashtabula Police Department revealed that the roommates had previously accompanied the deceased man to the bank, making it easier for them to carry out their plan. With the help of a third, unnamed individual, they transported the body to the bank branch where they made a withdrawal of an undisclosed sum of money. The suspects went as far as using the bank’s drive-thru teller window to complete their fraudulent transaction.

Discovery at Ashtabula County Medical Center

The bizarre scheme began to unravel when the roommates dropped off the deceased man’s body at the Ashtabula County Medical Center following the bank visit. They hastily left the scene without providing any information about the man to the hospital staff. It was only after one of the suspects called the facility later on that the man’s identity was revealed as Douglas Layman, 80, according to Chief Stell.

Authorities were alerted to the situation and went to Layman’s residence in Ashtabula, where the roommates confessed to their actions. The suspects have since made court appearances, with details about their pleas or legal representation remaining unclear at this time.

Further Legal Ramifications and Potential Charges

NBC affiliate WKYC of Cleveland reported that Casbohm’s bond was set at $5,000, while Feralo was scheduled for arraignment in the upcoming week. Chief Stell mentioned that additional charges could be brought against the roommates, pending further investigation by the county prosecutor’s office.

The shocking nature of this incident has left the community in disbelief, as the roommates face the consequences of their actions in the legal system. The Ashtabula Police Department continues to investigate the case to uncover any additional details surrounding the exploitation of the deceased man’s body for financial gain.
