West Palm Beach Man Faces Charges After Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident

In a tragic incident that shook the community of West Palm Beach, a local man is facing charges after a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old homeless man. The incident took place on Aug. 26 just after 11:30 p.m. in a parking lot located at 1515 N Dixie Hwy.

Eye-Witness Account of the Hit-and-Run

According to a probable cause affidavit, a witness at the scene recounted the events to investigators. The witness stated that after hitting the homeless man, the driver, later identified as Santos Rayes Villalba, drove a blue Audi Q7 across the street to the gated parking lot of Herrera Luxury Motors, a car dealership located at 411 15th St.

The witness further described how she saw Villalba exit his vehicle to open a closed gate to the property, seemingly unfazed by the gravity of the situation. Despite her attempts to alert him to the incident, Villalba proceeded to move his vehicle into the dealership’s parking lot.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Police arrived at the scene and interviewed Villalba about the incident. The affidavit stated that Villalba admitted to driving the Audi from the parking lot to the dealership, denying any knowledge of running over a pedestrian. However, officers noted signs of alcohol consumption, leading to Villalba agreeing to have his blood drawn for testing.

Further investigation revealed closed-circuit television footage of the crash, showing Villalba getting into the Audi and driving over the victim. The footage indicated movement consistent with the vehicle driving over an object, corroborating witness accounts of the hit-and-run.

Victim’s Account and Tragic Outcome

The victim, identified as Roque Leon, recounted waking up in the hospital after being run over by a vehicle while sleeping in a grassy area or on concrete. Leon suffered multiple injuries, including rib fractures and lacerations that required surgery. Tragically, Leon succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 19.

Court Appearance and Bond Conditions

Villalba was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle without a driver’s license causing death and driving under the influence while causing a fatal crash. During his court appearance, it was revealed that Villalba works at Herrera Luxury Motors painting vehicles. He is currently held at the main Palm Beach County jail on a $100,000 bond, with conditions including house arrest and no driving privileges.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of responsible behaviour behind the wheel. The community mourns the loss of Roque Leon and seeks justice for his untimely passing.
