Ancient Egyptians Infested with Parasites, Study Finds
Recent research has shed light on the health challenges faced by the inhabitants of ancient Egypt, revealing a high prevalence of parasites among mummies from that era. Visceral leishmaniasis, a fatal parasitic illness, was found in around 10 percent of mummies, highlighting the diverse range of parasites that affected this population.

The study suggests that the River Nile, despite its importance for agriculture, may have been a conduit for tropical water-borne parasites that thrived in the region. This could explain the high prevalence of parasitic infections among ancient Egyptians, despite the arid climate of the area.
