Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase in Putnam County, West Virginia

A man was taken into custody by the Hurricane Police Department after leading officers on a dangerous high-speed chase through Putnam County, West Virginia. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon, starting on Route 62 near Buffalo.

Reckless Driving Leads to Police Pursuit

Authorities attempted to pull over a vehicle they observed driving erratically on Route 62 towards Buffalo around 3:18 p.m. The driver refused to stop and instead accelerated, initiating a pursuit that reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The vehicle weaved dangerously between traffic and even passed a stopped school bus, putting children at risk.

Vehicle Disabled with Spike Strip

The chase continued until the Hurricane Police Department deployed a spike strip near the Popular Hills Subdivision. The strip successfully disabled the vehicle’s tires, but the driver continued to drive into a yard, causing damage before coming to a halt. The driver, later identified as James Dale Mullins, attempted to flee on foot alongside a 16-year-old passenger.

Arrest and Charges

Police were able to apprehend Mullins and the teenager, along with a third passenger, Kristi Lee Monique Sowards, who had an outstanding warrant. Mullins faces several charges including fleeing while driving under the influence, driving with a revoked license for DUI, child neglect, property damage, obstructing an officer, and lack of insurance.

Authorities are grateful that the situation was resolved without any injuries, but they are urging drivers to obey traffic laws and not put themselves and others in danger with reckless driving behaviour.
