Accident – Death – Obituary News :

JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) – A man has been charged in a shooting last month that resulted in the death of one man and the injury of another near southwest suburban Lockport.

The Incident

Jaron Nabors Jr., 24, has been charged with the murder of James Berry, 52, of Lockport Township, back on Thursday, Feb. 8. The tragic incident took place shortly after 7 p.m. on the 200 block of Riverview Avenue, where Will County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a distress call. Upon arrival, they discovered a 55-year-old man lying near the front door of the house, with Berry lying on the ground nearby – both victims of gunshot wounds.

The Victims

Regrettably, Berry succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while the other man was left paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the shooting and was still in recovery at a medical facility in Chicago as of Friday, according to the Sheriff’s office.

The Suspect

Investigations revealed that Berry was returning from a local grocery store with food for a birthday celebration when the tragic incident unfolded. Nabors approached the house and began firing at the two men as the older man opened the door. Witnesses reported hearing five or six gunshots at the scene.

Arrest and Recovery

Nabors, who was already a person of interest and wanted on a no-bond arrest warrant in an unrelated case, was apprehended by the Will County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Warrants Unit in Joliet Township. Despite attempting to flee, Nabors was captured without incident. A Glock 34 9mm handgun, used in the murder, was found in his possession.

Legal Proceedings

Although Nabors initially provided false statements regarding his involvement with the murder weapon, he is currently being held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility pending an initial court appearance.
