A tragic incident occurred in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where a pedestrian lost his life after being struck by a vehicle driven by a Wisconsin Rapids resident. The victim, identified as Herbert Wievel, 63, of Stevens Point, tragically passed away shortly after 8 p.m. on March 7. The driver, 43-year-old Kenneth L. Butler, now faces criminal charges in connection with the incident.

The Incident

According to Lt. Joe Johnson from the Stevens Point Police Department, Wievel was found by a passing pedestrian in a ditch near County Hwy. HH and West River Dr. after lying there for approximately five hours. He was airlifted to a Wausau hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The cause of death has not been disclosed to the public.

The Suspect

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, Butler was identified as the suspect in this case. He was apprehended on Wednesday with the assistance of the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department and has been booked into the Portage County Jail. Initially facing charges related to hit and run causing great bodily harm, these charges are expected to be revised following Wievel’s tragic demise.
