Man Arrested After High-Speed Chase in North Charleston

In a recent development in North Charleston, a man has been arrested by the North Charleston Police Department after leading them on a high-speed chase nearly a year-and-a half ago. Derrick Neal, aged 36, has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and failure to stop for blue lights, as per jail records.

Details of the Incident

The incident took place on November 11, 2022, when police attempted to stop a brown 2013 Nissan Altima that had been reported stolen from Berkeley County. The driver, later identified as Neal, refused to stop and led the police on a chase reaching speeds of 107 mph. The chase took place on Dorchester Road, where Neal was seen weaving in and out of traffic and using the center median to pass other vehicles.

The chase eventually came to a halt when police lost sight of the vehicle on Interstate 526. The stolen car was later found abandoned behind a U-Haul business on Oscar Johnson Drive.

Identification and Arrest

Officers found a driver’s license for the suspect inside the vehicle, which confirmed that Neal was the driver. Surveillance footage also corroborated this information. Neal was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.

Bond and Current Status

A judge has set bond at a total of $35,000 for the two charges against Neal. As of Thursday night, he remains at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

The North Charleston Police Department has commended their officers for their swift action in apprehending the suspect and bringing him to justice. The community can rest assured that such reckless behaviour will not be tolerated on the streets of North Charleston.
