A shocking incident has taken place in the quiet Ottawa suburb of Barrhaven, Ontario, Canada, where a 19-year-old student from Sri Lanka stands accused of a horrific crime. The suspect, identified as Febrio De-Zoysa, is alleged to have committed a brutal act of violence that resulted in the tragic deaths of six individuals he lived with, including a 2 1/2-month-old baby girl and three other young children from a Sri Lankan family.

Details of the Tragedy

Ottawa Police Chief Eric Stubbs revealed that the suspect used an “edged weapon” or “knife-like object” to carry out the heinous act. The victims, who were recently emigrated Sri Lankan nationals, include a 35-year-old mother, a 7-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, a 2-year-old daughter, the infant girl, as well as a 40-year-old acquaintance of the family.

When emergency services responded to the distressing scene, they found the father of the family outside the home, urgently calling for help. The father sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Community Response

The community of Barrhaven has been left in shock and disbelief following the tragic events. Neighbours recall meeting the family at a local Halloween party and describe them as friendly and kind-hearted individuals. The swift actions of law enforcement led to the prompt arrest of the suspect, ensuring there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Local residents express their deep sorrow and condolences to the victims and their families during this difficult time. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe have both expressed their profound sadness at the senseless act of violence that has shaken the community.

Legal Proceedings

Febrio De-Zoysa appeared in court amidst heavy security measures, where he was charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. The court ordered him not to communicate with the surviving family members or witnesses as the investigation continues.

The case has been adjourned to allow the suspect time to secure legal representation, with a future court date set for March 13. The Sri Lankan High Commission is liaising with relatives in Colombo to provide support and assistance during this tragic time.

As the investigation unfolds, the community of Barrhaven comes together to mourn the loss of innocent lives and seek justice for the victims of this heartbreaking tragedy.
