In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the residents of Ottawa, a 19-year-old student from Sri Lanka stands accused of a gruesome crime that has left six people dead, including a 2 1/2-month-old baby girl and three other children from a Sri Lankan family. The suspect, identified as Febrio De-Zoysa, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. This tragic event has sent shockwaves through the community as mass killings are rare in Canada.

The Tragic Scene

Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs revealed that an “edged weapon” or “knife-like object” was used in the attack. The victims, who were recent immigrants to Canada, include a 35-year-old mother, a 7-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, a 2-year-old daughter, and the 2 1/2-month-old baby girl, as well as a 40-year-old acquaintance of the family. The father of the family, who survived the attack, is currently hospitalized with serious injuries.

When the first responders arrived at the home in the Barrhaven area, the father was outside, screaming for help. The police received emergency calls at 10:52 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect was swiftly apprehended, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Neighbours of the family have expressed their shock and horror at the senseless violence that took place. Don Perera, a neighbour, described meeting the family at a Halloween party and noted that the father was from Sri Lanka. Shanti Ramesh, another neighbour, witnessed the commotion and saw the aftermath of the tragedy unfold.

Official Reactions

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe have both expressed their sorrow at the devastating loss of life. Trudeau called the incident “unbelievable,” while Sutcliffe described it as “distressing” for all residents of the city.

Legal Proceedings

Febrio De-Zoysa appeared in court, where he was ordered not to contact the surviving family members or witnesses. His case has been adjourned until March 13 to allow time for him to secure legal representation.

The victims have been identified as Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, the mother; Inuka Wickramasinghe, the 7-year-old boy; Ashwini Wickramasinghe, the 4-year-old girl; Rinyana Wickramasinghe, the 2-year-old girl; Kelly Wickramasinghe, the baby girl; and Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon, 40.
