Tragic Stabbing Incident in Ottawa Leaves Six Dead, Including Children

In a devastating turn of events, a 19-year-old student from Sri Lanka has been accused of stabbing and killing six people he lived with in Ottawa, Canada. Among the victims were a 2 1/2-month-old baby girl and three other children from a Sri Lankan family, as well as a 35-year-old mother and a 40-year-old acquaintance of the family.

Suspect Charged with First-Degree Murder

The suspect, identified as Febrio De-Zoysa, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs described the weapon used as an “edged weapon” or “knife-like object.” Mass killings are rare in Canada, making this incident all the more shocking.

Details of the Tragic Night

According to Stubbs, the police received two emergency calls at 10:52 p.m. on Wednesday. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the family’s father outside the home, screaming for someone to call 911. The father, who is now in hospital with serious injuries, was the sole survivor of the brutal attack.

Community in Mourning

Neighbours of the family expressed their shock and disbelief at the tragic events. Don Perera, a neighbour who had met the family at a Halloween party, described them as friendly and kind. Shanti Ramesh, another neighbour, witnessed the commotion on the night of the incident and saw the aftermath unfold.

Official Response

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe both expressed their shock and sadness at the senseless violence that took place. The high commission of Sri Lanka is in touch with relatives in Colombo, providing support and assistance during this difficult time.

Investigation Ongoing

Police have identified the victims as Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, Inuka Wickramasinghe, Ashwini Wickramasinghe, Rinyana Wickramasinghe, Kelly Wickramasinghe, and Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon. The suspect, De-Zoysa, appeared in court and will remain in custody until his next court date on March 13.

The community of Ottawa is left reeling from the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful night, as they come to terms with the loss of innocent lives in their midst.
