COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol has recently released alarming statistics regarding crashes in the state that have been caused by vehicle defects. In the past four years, a total of 9,811 crashes have been attributed to issues with vehicles, resulting in tragic consequences on Ohio roadways.

Common Factors in Vehicle Defect-Related Accidents

Among the incidents reported, brake failures and tire blowouts were identified as the most common contributing factors to crashes caused by vehicle defects. These issues have led to numerous accidents, with 46 crashes resulting in fatalities and claiming the lives of 54 individuals. Additionally, 2,819 people have been injured in such crashes, highlighting the need for increased awareness and proactive vehicle maintenance.

Governor DeWine’s Call for Vehicle Safety

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has issued a statement urging drivers to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of their vehicles. Regular inspections and maintenance checks are crucial in preventing avoidable accidents on the state’s roadways. Governor DeWine emphasised the importance of vehicle maintenance in safeguarding the lives of all drivers and passengers.

Vehicle Age and Crash Statistics

Statistics revealed that older vehicles were involved in nearly half of all vehicle defect-related crashes from 2019 to 2023. Vehicles manufactured between 2001 and 2010 accounted for 47 percent of these incidents, while those from model years 2011 to 2020 were involved in 29 percent of crashes. This data highlights the importance of regular maintenance for vehicles of all ages.

Colonel Charles A. Jones, Superintendent of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, has emphasised the critical role of proper vehicle maintenance in ensuring road safety. He warned that operating a vehicle that is not in good working order can have serious consequences for both the driver and others on the road. The Patrol encourages residents to report unsafe driving or request assistance by dialling #677 while on Ohio roadways.
