The U.S. Border Patrol Provides Details on Fatal Shooting Incident

The U.S. Border Patrol has shared more information regarding a tragic incident that took place in the mountains east of San Diego last weekend. The fatal shooting occurred in the Puebla Tree area of the Otay Mountains, approximately five miles east of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. Border Patrol agents were conducting operations in the area in response to reports of armed robberies and assaults targeting groups of migrants crossing into the United States.

Details of the Incident

According to witness interviews conducted by investigators, a group of migrants was walking on the paved road in the early morning hours when they were approached by four individuals, one of whom was armed with a handgun. The armed individual demanded money from the group, chambered a round in his pistol, and pointed the weapon at one of the migrants. A single gunshot was heard, and the armed individual fell to the ground. The migrants were unable to determine where the shot had come from.

Border Patrol agents, who were positioned nearby, witnessed the armed individual threatening the migrants with his gun. When the armed individual pointed the weapon at one of the migrants, a precision marksman fired a single round, striking the armed individual.

Medical Response and Investigation

After the shooting, a Border Patrol agent who was also an EMT, along with another agent, arrived on the scene and performed a medical assessment of the wounded individual. Despite their efforts, the individual did not survive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa. An autopsy was conducted by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office on the deceased individual, who was identified as a 32-year-old citizen of Mexico.

Subsequent Actions

Following the shooting, Border Patrol agents apprehended 17 migrants in the area. However, three individuals who were possibly armed managed to flee into Mexico. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the FBI, and Customs and Border Protection are currently conducting an investigation into the incident to gather more information and determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

As more details emerge, authorities are working to piece together the events that led to this tragic outcome. The Border Patrol remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of both migrants and agents along the U.S.-Mexico border.
