The Focal Points of Republican Efforts to Overturn the 2020 Presidential Election

In a recent report released by States United Action, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to protecting elections, it was revealed that seven states, including Michigan, were the focal points of Republican efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The report identified more than 200 legislators across Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin as “election deniers.”

The Impact of “Election Deniers” on Democracy

According to Joanna Lydgate, CEO of States United Action, state legislators have significant power to shape voting procedures and election administration. The presence of “election deniers” in these positions threatens the integrity of our democracy, as they work to erode public trust and undermine free and fair elections.

Identifying “Election Deniers”

The report defined “election deniers” as legislators who have introduced or supported bills that create barriers to voting, spread election conspiracy theories, or interfere with the routine functioning of elections. The data used to identify these individuals was collected from social media accounts, websites, and news media coverage.

Michigan Legislators Among the “Election Deniers”

In Michigan, the report identified 31 state legislators, all Republicans, as “election deniers.” This group makes up 21% of the state legislature and includes key figures such as Senators Jon Bumstead, Rick Outman, and Roger Victory, who were involved in the fake-elector scheme to overturn the 2020 election results.

Actions of Michigan “Election Deniers”

State Representative Matt Maddock, along with other legislators, sent a letter to then-Vice President Mike Pence asking not to certify the presidential election results. Maddock and his wife also organized buses for individuals to attend the Jan. 6 protests in Washington, D.C., which culminated in the storming of the U.S. Capitol.

Erosion of Public Trust

According to the report, “election deniers” in state legislatures are introducing legislation that undermines the integrity of elections and perpetuates conspiracy theories and lies. This erosion of public trust poses a significant threat to the democratic process.

As the 2022 election year unfolds, it is crucial to monitor the actions of “election deniers” at all levels of government. Their influence on voting procedures and election integrity cannot be understated, and efforts must be made to combat the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories.
