Second Suspect Arrested in Connection to Sussex Central High School Basketball Game Shooting

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Police have apprehended a second suspect in relation to a shooting that took place at a Sussex Central High School basketball game last week.

On the evening of February 27th, troopers stationed at Sussex Central High School were monitoring a basketball game when they were alerted to gunshots in the area. Upon investigation, law enforcement officers discovered multiple shell casings in the parking lot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection to the incident.

Details of the Incident

Following their inquiry, troopers identified a 15-year-old student as the individual responsible for the shooting. Further examination revealed that the teenager had fired shots at a vehicle traveling southbound on Patriots Way after departing from the school’s parking lot. The 15-year-old then fled the scene in a Jeep Cherokee, driven by 19-year-old Gerod Sturgis. Additionally, it was found that Howard T. Ennis School, located across from Sussex Central High School, had also been struck by gunfire during the episode. The 15-year-old suspect has since been charged with four felony counts of first-degree reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, and is currently detained at the Stevenson House Detention Center.

Arrest of Gerod Sturgis

On February 29th, authorities took Gerod Sturgis into custody and charged him with possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, second-degree conspiracy, and hindering prosecution. Sturgis is being held at SCI on a $6,000 secured bond.
