Delaware State Police have apprehended 19-year-old Gerod Sturgis of Georgetown, Delaware, in connection with a shooting incident that took place last week at Sussex Central High School.

Details of the Incident

On the evening of February 27, 2024, troopers stationed at Sussex Central High School were alerted to gunfire in the vicinity during a basketball game. Upon arriving at the school’s parking lot, troopers found multiple shell casings but fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Investigations revealed that a 15-year-old suspect had fired shots at a vehicle traveling southbound on Patriots Way after leaving the school’s parking lot. Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a Jeep Cherokee driven by Gerod Sturgis.

During the incident, gunfire also struck Howard T. Ennis School, located across from Sussex Central High School. As a result, the 15-year-old suspect has been charged with four felony counts of reckless endangering 1st degree and one count of criminal mischief. He is currently detained at Stevenson House Detention Center.

Arrest and Charges

Gerod Sturgis was taken into custody on February 29, 2024, at Troop 4. He has been charged with possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, conspiracy 2nd degree, and hindering prosecution. Sturgis was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and is being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on a $6,000 secured bond.
