Man Charged with Attempted Murder in North Memphis

In a disturbing incident in North Memphis, a man with a criminal record in Illinois has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly trying to shoot his cousin’s estranged husband. Quarren Smallie, 38, now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Details of the Incident

The victim, Anthony Rivers, recounted the harrowing experience of being targeted by Smallie. Rivers was walking near his home on Latham Street when a car drove past him, made a U-turn, and opened fire. Fortunately, Rivers managed to escape unscathed despite Smallie firing at least four shots at him.

Rivers identified the shooter as his estranged wife’s cousin, known only as Boo Bop, who was later confirmed to be Smallie. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but Rivers believes he was targeted due to personal conflicts.

Escalating Violence

Unfortunately, this was not the first instance of violence directed towards Rivers. Just days after the shooting, his estranged wife allegedly drove past his house and pointed a gun at him. Rivers disclosed to investigators that since their separation, he has been shot at twice, had his house set on fire, and discovered his ex had taken out a life insurance policy in his name.

Feeling unsafe in his own home, Rivers expressed his fear and vulnerability in the face of ongoing threats and attacks. The situation has left him traumatized and constantly on edge.

Criminal Record of the Suspect

Authorities revealed that Smallie has a criminal record in Illinois dating back to 2007. Despite his past transgressions, he remains the sole individual charged in connection with the shooting. Smallie is currently in police custody on a $200,000 bond as the investigation continues.

As the community grapples with this shocking incident, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. The safety and well-being of individuals should always be a top priority in the face of such senseless violence.
