71-Year-Old Delhi Doctor Falls Into Sextortion Trap, Loses Rs 9 Lakh

The men are from Rajasthan and have targeted people from several states.

New Delhi:

When a 71-year-old Delhi doctor received a video call at midnight, he was taken aback to see a woman in a compromising position on the screen. Little did he know that this call would lead to a harrowing experience of extortion and blackmail, resulting in him losing nearly Rs 9 lakh to a sextortion gang, as revealed by the police on Thursday.

The doctor, who lives in the bustling city of New Delhi, initially thought the call was related to a medical emergency. However, the situation quickly turned sinister as the woman on the call recorded their interaction, setting off a chain of events that would haunt him for weeks to come.

After enduring prolonged torment, the doctor finally decided to seek help from the Delhi Police. This decision ultimately led to the apprehension of two brothers from the state of Rajasthan, who were operating a sextortion ring that had victimized at least 25 individuals across different states.

Police Intervention

Upon approaching the Cyber Police Station in East District, the doctor detailed his ordeal of incessant calls and threats from the extortion gang. Despite having transferred a significant sum of money to them, the demands persisted, prompting him to seek legal recourse.

Investigation and Arrest

Following the registration of a case encompassing charges of cheating, criminal intimidation, and extortion, the police initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East District) Apoorva Gupta disclosed, “We conducted surveillance on the numbers used to contact the doctor, eventually leading us to Rajasthan. With the aid of informers, we identified and apprehended two suspects—Abdul Rehman, 39, and his brother Aamir Khan, 26.”

The duo, residents of Mewat in Deeg district, Rajasthan, were found in possession of multiple phones, including those utilized for the initial video call and subsequent extortion demands.

Money Trail

During the course of the investigation, a trail of money transfers to bank accounts in Haryana, Punjab, and Maharashtra was uncovered. Notably, these accounts had been opened without undergoing the mandatory KYC verification process.

Additional Victims

DCP Gupta hinted at the existence of 25 other victims targeted by the gang, hailing from various states such as Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, among others.

Furthermore, the police identified three individuals who had mentored the arrested brothers in the art of sextortion, all hailing from the same village.
