Last Sunday in the early hours of the morning, tragedy struck in Nomzamo, as a fatal shack fire claimed the life of a 44-year-old mother and sister, Nokwanele Gwabeni. The incident occurred in Koyini Street, leaving the informal structure gutted and the community in mourning.

Emergency Response

Upon receiving an emergency call just before 02:00, firefighting crews from Lwandle, Strand, and Sir Lowry’s Pass swiftly responded to the scene. By 02:25, the firefighters managed to contain and extinguish the blaze that had engulfed the single structure where the fatal incident took place.

Possible Cause

Authorities suspect that a suspected electrical fault may have been the cause of the fire that led to the tragic death of Nokwanele Gwabeni. The charred remains of the deceased were discovered inside the wooden backyard structure.

Police Investigation

While no foul play is suspected, Lwandle police have opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly fire. Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
