Tragic Workplace Violence Leaves Two Dead in Salt Lake City Business
Over the weekend, a tragic incident unfolded at a Salt Lake City business, resulting in two fatalities due to workplace violence. The Salt Lake City Police Department has identified the shooting victim as 61-year-old Hay Ly, while the shooter has been named as 56-year-old Miller Bin, an employee of the business.
The shooting took place on Sunday at Varex Imaging, located at 1678 S. Pioneer Road, approximately 2700 West, around 2:30 p.m. Following the initial shooting, Bin took his own life in a parking lot on the company’s premises, according to police reports.
Despite the devastating events, the CEO of the company made the decision to keep the business open in the aftermath. “We felt that it was critical that the business stay open to allow employees to come together, avoid isolation, lean on one another as a family, and give each other a chance to express themselves and support each other through this grieving and recovery process,” stated company CEO Sunny Sanyal.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), acts of violence and other injuries rank as the third-leading cause of fatal occupational injuries in the United States. In 2019, out of the 5,333 fatal workplace injuries reported, 761 cases were attributed to intentional injury by another person, accounting for 14% of the total fatalities.

Brent Weisburg, communications director for the Salt Lake City Police Department, shared that the authorities are still in the process of understanding the details of this tragic homicide-suicide case. While both individuals involved were believed to be employees, the motive behind the incident is yet to be determined.
