THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Tragedy struck in Chenkottukonam as a 46-year-old woman named Saritha succumbed to injuries after being set on fire by a friend. The incident, which occurred last night, has left the local community in shock and mourning. Saritha, a resident of Somasoutham House near S N Public School, was allegedly attacked by Binu, a 50-year-old man from Chellamangalam Plavila House in Powdikonam.


According to reports, Binu arrived on an Activa scooter and poured petrol on Saritha before setting her ablaze. He then proceeded to set himself on fire as well. The horrific incident unfolded at 8:30 pm, prompting nearby residents to rush to the scene upon hearing Saritha’s cries for help. They managed to extinguish the flames by covering her with sacks and clothes before rushing her to Medical College Hospital in an ambulance.


Meanwhile, Binu was found behind the house with severe burns on his body. In a desperate attempt to escape, he jumped into a well on the property, prompting the Kazhakoottam Fire Force to intervene and rescue him. Both Saritha and Binu were then taken to the hospital for treatment, with the latter claiming that the former had instructed him to buy petrol for her two-wheeler before the tragic incident occurred.


Saritha, who was a helper on a private school bus, leaves behind a daughter who is currently studying in college. The accused, Binu, is a father of two children who attend the same school where Saritha was employed. Locals have revealed that the two individuals had known each other for an extended period of time, with Saritha having lost her husband a decade ago.


The Kazhakoottam police have launched an investigation into the incident, registering a case to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The community is reeling from the shocking turn of events and is mourning the loss of Saritha, a beloved member of the neighborhood.
