Murder Arrest Made at Oasis Club Apartments

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has announced a significant development in a murder case that shook the community in 2023. The incident took place in the parking lot of the Oasis Club apartments, a residential complex located at 5800 University Blvd W.

Gunfire Erupts in Broad Daylight

On a fateful day in February 2023, the tranquility of the Oasis Club apartments was shattered by the sound of gunfire. At around 2:20 p.m., officers rushed to the scene following reports of a shooting. They discovered a man, aged between 40-45, inside a green SUV, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Despite his injuries, the victim attempted to drive away but tragically collided with another vehicle just a few feet away. The Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department pronounced him dead at the scene.

Victim Identified as Makensi Baptisme

After meticulous investigations by JSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene Units, the victim was identified as Makensi Baptisme. It was revealed that Carl Alexander Smith, aged 34, was the prime suspect in the fatal shooting.

Arrest and Extradition

Following the issuance of an arrest warrant on February 2, 2024, Smith was located and apprehended in Texas with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals. On March 5, 2024, he was extradited to Jacksonville and booked in the Pre-Trial Detention Facility on charges of Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
