Calhoun County, West Virginia: School Bus Driver Charged with DUI After Rollover Crash

In a recent incident that has shocked the community of Calhoun County, West Virginia, a school bus driver has been accused of driving under the influence following a rollover crash that resulted in multiple injuries to students. The driver, identified as 54-year-old Jeffrey Allen Brannon, faces charges of DUI causing injury and child neglect causing injury.

Details of the Incident

According to reports from West Virginia State Police, the crash occurred on State Route 16 in Calhoun County when Brannon ran off the road and struck a culvert, causing the school bus to tip over. The incident, which took place around 6 p.m., led to the evacuation of children from the back of the bus by EMS crews.

Sheriff Graham Knight of Calhoun County revealed that the bus involved in the accident was an activity bus leaving Calhoun County High School. Three children, aged between 12 and 14, sustained serious injuries, including a concussion and a fractured vertebra. While two of the victims were airlifted from the scene, their injuries are said to be non-life-threatening.

Driver’s Blood-Alcohol Level

The criminal complaint stated that Brannon had a blood-alcohol level of .127%, as measured by an Intoximeter. A preliminary breath test conducted at the scene showed a reading of .161%, which is nearly twice the legal limit. Upon arrival at the scene, investigators noted that Brannon was behaving aggressively and shouting.

Legal Proceedings and School Closure

Following his arraignment, Brannon’s bond was set at $250,000, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 14. In response to the incident, Sheriff Knight announced that all Calhoun County schools would be closed on Tuesday.
