MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE: A tragic incident unfolded in Memphis, Tennessee, when 29-year-old Kiauna Newsom mistakenly shot her roommate while attempting to harm her ex-boyfriend after a heated argument at a store.

Newsom fatally shot her ex-boyfriend’s roommate, George Harris, multiple times in what authorities have described as a case of mistaken identity, according to reports from Law&Crime

Court documents reveal that Newsom was taken into custody on Sunday, March 3, and charged with one count of first-degree murder in the killing of Harris.

Incident Details

The Memphis Police Department responded to a distress call at approximately 1.53 pm on Saturday, March 2, reporting a shooting outside a residence in the 5400 block of Apple Blossom Drive.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered an unresponsive individual identified as Harris inside a parked Chevy Malibu. Harris had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with four bullet holes visible in the driver’s side door of the vehicle.

Harris was swiftly transported to Regional One Health, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Surveillance Footage Uncovered

Investigators obtained surveillance footage from a nearby camera that purportedly captured the shooting. The video depicted a Nissan Altima with distinctive damage being driven by a woman in a white T-shirt, tailing the Chevy Malibu just before the incident.

Upon interviewing Harris’ roommate, who is Newsom’s ex-boyfriend, it was revealed that the car belonged to him and had been borrowed by Harris. The ex-boyfriend expressed belief that he was the intended target and Harris was mistakenly identified as such.

According to the ex-boyfriend, he and Newsom engaged in a dispute at a store located at Kirby and Shelby Drive. Subsequently, he returned home, where Harris requested to borrow his car.

After lending the vehicle to Harris, the ex-boyfriend received a distressing call informing him of the shooting. Surveillance footage from the store showed Newsom in a white V-neck shirt driving a gray Nissan shortly before the tragic incident.

Arrest and Further Investigations

Authorities proceeded to Newsom’s residence, where a vehicle exhibiting similar damage was identified. Surveillance footage captured Newsom returning home at 2.06 pm on the day of the shooting.

Newsom was apprehended at approximately 2 pm on March 3. In her affidavit, she confessed to driving the Nissan and scouring for her ex-boyfriend’s vehicle with an individual known as Boogie.

Further details revealed that upon locating the vehicle, Boogie brandished a rifle-style firearm and discharged multiple rounds into the Chevy Malibu. Newsom then fled the scene in the Nissan alongside Boogie.

Newsom positively identified Boogie as Justin Howard from a set of pictures. Although a warrant was issued for his arrest, Howard had not been taken into custody at the time of writing. Newsom is currently incarcerated without bond.
