In a devastating incident that shook the community of Passaic, authorities have identified the victims of a fatal apartment fire that occurred on Sunday morning. The fire, which engulfed two rear units of a two-story complex on Spruce Street, claimed the lives of Fred Edwards, 80, and Yvonne Edwards, 70, a married couple who resided in one of the affected apartments.

Rescue Efforts and Investigation

Passaic Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost Sr. reported that firefighters made every possible effort to gain entry into the burning apartment units. Despite their courageous attempts, the blaze proved to be fatal for the Edwards couple. Several firefighters sustained burns during the rescue operation, with one individual being hospitalized at St. Mary’s General Hospital before being discharged.

While the fire has been deemed accidental, authorities are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of the tragic incident. As of Monday afternoon, Chief Trentacost stated that the investigation was ongoing to determine the root of the fire.

Impact on Residents

The fire not only resulted in the loss of lives but also left several residents of the apartment complex displaced. Red Cross workers stepped in to provide emergency assistance to affected families, offering temporary lodging, food, and other essential support to help them through this challenging time.

Passaic Mayor Hector Lora expressed his sorrow over the incident, noting that while the front units of the building were unharmed, the four rear units, including the one where the Edwards lived, suffered significant damage. The mayor confirmed that one unit remains uninhabitable, while the status of the other two units is yet to be determined.
