High Tensions in Lwabyata Sub-county After Gruesome Murder

Tensions are running high in Lwabyata Sub-county following the brutal murder of a Kibanja holder who had previously been attacked by private security guards on a disputed 5 square mile land in Nakasongola District.

Details of the Incident

The recent surge in tensions stems from the killing of Dan Ssebyala, a resident of Ndaiga Village, by unknown assailants wielding machetes. This tragic incident occurred shortly after Ssebyala was warned by a manager on the disputed land to cease cultivation activities.

Nakasongola District LC5 Chairperson Sam Kigula has confirmed that police and other security agencies have been deployed to prevent further escalation of the situation, as residents are reportedly mobilizing in response to the murder.

Calls for Intervention

Kigula expressed concern over the escalating violence, calling on higher authorities to intervene in the longstanding land dispute that has now claimed the life of a Kibanja holder. He emphasized the need for a swift resolution to prevent further bloodshed.

Family members of the deceased revealed that Ssebyala was ambushed by machete-wielding individuals as he made his way home late in the evening. Prior to the attack, he had been confronted by a man identified as Gideon, a manager linked to the disputed land.

Previous Incidents and Disputes

It has been reported that Ssebyala had previously discovered used cartridges left behind by private security guards who allegedly assaulted his property in an attempt to enforce an eviction. These guards were allegedly deployed by Jotham Mafende, the purported landlord embroiled in the contentious land dispute.

Authorities in Nakasongola have taken steps to address the situation, with the disarming of Mafende’s security personnel and the arrest of farm workers who failed to comply with registration requirements set by the district security committee. The ongoing conflict has affected an estimated 4,000 residents from six villages within Lwabyata Subcounty.

Current Status and Investigations

Nakasongola RDC Saleh Kamba has urged residents to remain calm as security officials conduct investigations into the tragic events unfolding in Ndaiga Village. The incident, which occurred on land that Ssebyala believed to be his own, underscores the complexities of land ownership and disputes in the region.
