Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Tragedy Strikes off the Coast of Cyprus

A heartbreaking incident has unfolded off the coast of Cyprus, where a six-year-old boy lost his life due to malnutrition after spending days at sea. The harrowing journey began when a vessel carrying 35 migrants, including women, children, and unaccompanied minors, set sail from the border region between Syria and Lebanon on February 20.

Rescue Operation

After being adrift for several days, the boat was eventually located 58 nautical miles off the coast of Larnaca on February 29. The Cyprus Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) sprang into action, rescuing 31 individuals, including two who required immediate hospitalization due to severe hypernatremia caused by ingesting seawater.

Survivors’ Ordeal

Survivors of the tragic voyage recounted the challenges they faced, with adverse weather conditions depleting the boat’s fuel, food, and water supplies. To stay alive, the desperate passengers resorted to drinking seawater, leading to severe health issues.

Arrest and Investigations

Cyprus Police have arrested a 22-year-old man, believed to be the navigator of the ill-fated vessel, on charges of manslaughter. The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is conducting thorough investigations to determine if any of the rescued migrants were involved in human trafficking.

Family’s Heartbreaking Loss

The father of the deceased six-year-old boy shared the heartbreaking account of his son’s deteriorating health due to malnutrition and prolonged consumption of seawater. The boy tragically passed away on February 28, prompting the passengers to make a difficult decision to bury him at sea to prevent health risks.

International Coordination

Following the disappearance of the vessel, a search and investigation were launched, involving coordination with Interpol in Beirut, Damascus, Ankara, and Athens. Concerned relatives of the passengers raised the alarm when all contact was lost with their loved ones, leading to the eventual rescue operation.

Charges and Legal Action

While the initial suspicions revolved around human trafficking, the 22-year-old navigator now faces re-arrest and charges of manslaughter and negligent homicide. The tragic incident has shed light on the dangers faced by migrants seeking refuge and a better life.
