As the motorcycle riding season kicks off in Vernon, CT, two tragic accidents have already resulted in the loss of two local residents. Both state and Vernon police are urging riders to exercise caution during this early stage of the season, with sand still present on many roads and unpredictable weather conditions.

Fatal Crash on Tolland Stage Road

On Sunday, a motorcyclist from Vernon lost his life in a devastating crash on Tolland Stage Road in Tolland. The incident occurred at 5:03 p.m. at the curve where the road intersects with Burbank Road, as reported by state police.

According to the crash report, a 2023 Yamaha sport bike was travelling west on Tolland Stage Road, also known as state Route 74. The driver, identified as 33-year-old Nicholas Mark Rustic, suddenly lost control of the motorcycle, skidded, and collided with a metal guardrail. Tragically, Rustic was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact state police at 860-896-3200.

Hit-and-Run Incident on Prospect Street

In another heartbreaking incident, a hit-and-run crash on Feb. 27 claimed the life of another Vernon resident. The crash occurred at 2:48 p.m. on Prospect Street and involved a white 2018 Infiniti Q50 that fled the scene after the collision.

The crash involved a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle being operated by 25-year-old James Faulkner of Vernon. Faulkner was rushed to Rockville General Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the hit-and-run incident.

These tragedies serve as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, especially during the early stages of the motorcycle riding season. Both incidents are under investigation, and authorities are urging all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws to prevent further loss of life.
