A man was taken into custody early Monday morning in Miami County after managing to escape from his house arrest in Kokomo, Indiana State Police reported.

Hostage Situation in Peru

Indiana State Police troopers were called to a residence on East 32 Street in Peru at approximately 3:59 a.m. on Monday following a report of a hostage situation. The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Michael Shepard, had allegedly removed his ankle monitor and fled from house arrest in Kokomo. Upon barricading himself inside the residence with a woman and child, law enforcement was alerted.

The woman and child were safely evacuated from the home without any harm, according to ISP. Shepard, however, remained inside and refused to cooperate with authorities.

SWAT Team Involvement

Due to the possibility that Shepard was armed and dangerous, the ISP North SWAT Team and crisis negotiators were called in to assist at the scene. Despite multiple commands from law enforcement, Shepard remained unresponsive.

After obtaining a search warrant, authorities entered the residence and successfully apprehended Shepard with the assistance of a SWAT K-9. During a search of the premises, a firearm and drug paraphernalia were discovered.

Preliminary Charges

Shepard was taken into custody and transported to the Miami County Jail, where he is facing several preliminary charges, including:

  • Intimidation with a deadly weapon – level 5 felony
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm – level 5 felony
  • Pointing a firearm – level 6 felony
  • Criminal confinement – level 6 felony
  • Resisting law enforcement – class A misdemeanor
  • Interfering with the reporting of a crime – class A misdemeanor
  • Possession of paraphernalia – class C misdemeanor

Shepard’s arrest serves as a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face in their line of duty and the importance of swift and effective responses to potential threats.
