Authorities have identified the 34-year-old woman who was killed on Thursday, February 29, when her car was struck by a container truck near Georgetown.

Delaware State Police said Maria Niz-Chilel, of Georgetown, is the 34-year-old driver of the 2008 Honda Civic that was involved in the fatal collision with a 2020 Volvo VHD roll-off dumpster truck.

According to police, around 7:40 a.m. Thursday, Niz-Chilel was driving south on Bull Pine Road approaching the intersection with Shortly Road. After failing to stop at the stop sign, the Honda entered the intersection and collided with the Volvo container truck traveling on Shortly Road.

The impact caused the Volvo to pass over the Honda and leave the roadway while the Honda spun until it came to rest in the eastbound lane of Shortly Road.

Niz-Chilel was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, a 29-year-old woman from Georgetown, was flown to a hospital in critical condition. The 59-year-old Millsboro man who was driving the Volvo was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to police, the area was closed for over six hours and the accident remains under investigation.

The driver of the Volvo, a 59-year-old man from Millsboro, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
