A devastating car accident on the Chon Buri motorway has claimed the lives of a Malaysian man and two Chinese nationals, leaving one Chinese woman injured. The incident occurred at a rest area on the motorway, where a white BMW sedan collided with a large rest area sign, resulting in significant damage to the vehicle.
Details of the Accident
Highway Police officers and Dhamma Rassamee Foundation rescuers responded to the scene at approximately 10am on March 3. Upon arrival, they found four individuals trapped inside the car. The driver, identified as 32-year-old Malaysian man Lee Chin Keong, was found dead in the driver’s seat with severe head and neck injuries.
35-year-old Chinese woman Xigoyu Ji was discovered in the back seat hugging her two-month-old son Yic Heng Ma, who tragically lost his life in the accident. Xigoyu sustained serious injuries and later succumbed to them in the hospital. Additionally, a five-year-old Chinese girl named Yu Qing Ma was found outside the car with a leg injury and was taken to the hospital, where she remains in stable condition.
Background of the Victims
Nattaporn, a 33-year-old Thai woman who worked for Xigoyu, revealed that the Chinese woman and her family were involved in the shipping business in Thailand, based in Chon Buri. On the day of the accident, Xigoyu had taken her son to the hospital for a vaccination when the tragic incident occurred on their way back home.
Possible Causes of the Accident
Although initial reports suggested that a pickup truck driving against traffic may have caused the BMW to swerve and hit the sign, police investigations indicated that the Malaysian driver likely fell asleep at the wheel. Despite checking CCTV footage at the scene, authorities could not locate the pickup truck mentioned by witnesses.
Locals in the area noted that driving against traffic at the rest area was not uncommon, leading to multiple accidents in the past. The shocking loss of life in this tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance while driving.
