Commitment to Traffic Safety Projects in Pittsburgh

Officials in Pittsburgh have reiterated their dedication to reducing fatal vehicle crashes through the implementation of speed humps and similar projects. The initiative, known as Vision Zero, aims to tackle car crashes and ultimately eliminate fatal incidents on the city’s streets.

Increased Budget for Traffic Safety Initiatives

This year, the city has allocated $1.4 million towards traffic safety initiatives, which is double the amount set aside for such efforts last year. The focus will be on areas with high rates of injuries and fatalities, although specific details on project locations and timelines are yet to be provided.

Focus on Traffic Calming Efforts

The Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) was established in 2016 to address traffic safety concerns. Director Kim Lucas emphasized the need to intensify efforts in traffic calming with the increased budget allocation.

Impact of Traffic Calming Projects

Projects such as speed humps, flex posts, and improved traffic signals have shown promising results in reducing speeding and decreasing pedestrian-involved crashes. Specific statistics from DOMI indicate a 55% reduction in speeding due to speed humps and a 60% decrease in pedestrian-involved crashes at intersections where right turns on red are prohibited.

Priority Areas for Traffic Safety Initiatives

Roads with a high rate of serious crashes, including Bennett Street, Frankstown Avenue, and Liberty Avenue, will receive particular attention. Officials are working to address a backlog of approximately 1,000 traffic safety requests while prioritizing locations based on crash history and pedestrian activity.

Call for Collaboration

City officials are urging state leaders to support Vision Zero goals by allowing automatic speeding enforcement. Additionally, drivers are encouraged to play their part by adhering to speed limits, obeying traffic signals, and being mindful of pedestrians and cyclists on the road.

Mayor Ed Gainey emphasized the importance of collective efforts in saving lives and making Pittsburgh’s streets safer. With a focus on collaboration and proactive measures, the city aims to create a safer environment for all road users.
