The Growing Concern for Road Safety in Massachusetts
Last week, the state highway administrator emphasized the critical issue of safety on Massachusetts roadways, describing it as being “at a crisis level.” The Department of Transportation has been actively working to address some of the most dangerous and deadly situations that have been occurring on local roads.
Alarming Statistics on Motor Vehicle Crashes
According to MassDOT’s crash data portal, there were 134,233 motor vehicle crashes in Massachusetts last year. This marked an increase from the previous years, with 132,659 crashes in 2022 and 124,734 crashes in 2021. The number of fatal crashes has also been on the rise, reaching 409 in 2022, the highest since 2005.
Current Roadway Safety Challenges
As of 2024, there have been 15,948 crashes reported in Massachusetts, including 40 fatalities, 234 crashes involving pedestrians, and 58 crashes involving cyclists. Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver raised concerns about the crisis level of roadway safety in the state and across the nation during a recent budget presentation to lawmakers.
Implementing Safety Measures
MassDOT has successfully completed a wrong-way driver deterrence pilot program, which has proven to be effective in preventing dangerous situations on highways. This initiative includes 16 highway on/off ramps equipped to detect wrong-way drivers, alert them, and notify a state command center to address potential risks.
Expanding Safety Initiatives
Gulliver expressed the department’s intention to expand on the pilot program to enhance safety measures on Massachusetts roadways. The installation of signage and warning systems at problematic locations has been instrumental in reducing confusion and preventing accidents, especially during nighttime driving.
Addressing Legislative Changes
Legislators were informed about MassDOT’s efforts to implement the roadway safety law passed in late 2022. New requirements have been introduced to protect pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vulnerable road users from the dangers posed by motor vehicles. These include regulations on passing distances and school zone speed limits.
Enhancing Communication and Awareness
To educate drivers about the new rules of the road, MassDOT has distributed thousands of free signs across the state. These signs serve as reminders for drivers to maintain a safe passing distance and adhere to speed limits in school zones. The department has also made adjustments to regulations concerning the designation of school zones to improve safety for all road users.
