Tragic Incident Unfolds in Tregear, Western Sydney

On a somber afternoon in January 2019, the peaceful suburb of Tregear in western Sydney became the backdrop for a heart-wrenching display of heroism and tragedy. Colin Amatto, a 40-year-old Yuin man, found himself in the midst of a dangerous situation involving an aggressive dog attack. Without a second thought, he rushed to the aid of a woman and child who were being viciously attacked by the dogs, putting his own life on the line in a selfless act of bravery.

A Hero’s Sacrifice

The dogs, described as having pitbull characteristics but officially identified as Staffordshire bull terriers, turned their aggression towards Amatto as he intervened to save the woman and child. Despite his heroic efforts, Amatto sustained over 80 wounds from the ferocious animals. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals at Westmead Hospital, Amatto tragically succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of courage and selflessness.

A Troubling History Unveiled

Further investigation into the dogs’ background revealed a disturbing incident in 2017 when one of the dogs had attacked a real estate agent, causing severe injuries. Despite this violent behavior, the dog was returned to its owner under the premise of being protective of its property. Amatto’s close relationship with the dogs, having lived and slept with them, adds a layer of complexity to the tragic events, hinting at an unforeseen escalation in their aggression.

Seeking Answers and Solutions

Deputy State Coroner Carmel Foster is leading an inquest to uncover the circumstances surrounding Amatto’s untimely death and to evaluate the efficacy of local council responses to prevent similar tragedies. The recounting of Amatto’s final act of bravery and the examination of the dogs’ troubling history serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of community safety measures and animal management policies. Through this process, it is hoped that valuable lessons will be learned to prevent future loss of life and honor the memory of those who have fallen victim to unforeseen acts of violence.
