ARTESIA — Over the weekend, a dramatic incident unfolded in the peaceful town of Artesia, New Mexico. The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) are currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place between a domestic violence suspect and two Artesia Police Department (APD) officers.

The Incident

On Saturday, March 2, just after 9 p.m., the APD received a distress call regarding a domestic dispute at a residence in the 1800 block of West Centre Avenue. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Clifton Stevenson, fled the scene upon the arrival of the police.

The Confrontation

As the search for Stevenson ensued, it was reported that he was seen running towards 18th Street. Two officers managed to intercept him in the south alley behind the 1800 block of Centre. The officers claimed to have witnessed Stevenson brandishing a firearm, prompting them to discharge their weapons in response.

The Aftermath

Stevenson was struck by at least one gunshot and was provided with immediate medical assistance before being flown to a Texas hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He has since been discharged from the hospital. Fortunately, no officers were harmed during the incident.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The NMSP’s Investigations Bureau is diligently looking into the matter, gathering evidence and conducting interviews. All findings will be presented to the district attorney for further scrutiny. Meanwhile, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as per standard protocol.

Legal Action

Although Stevenson has not yet faced formal charges in court, he was taken into custody at the Eddy County Detention Center on Sunday afternoon. He is currently facing charges of battery upon a household member, criminal damage to the property of a household member (under $1,000), and resisting, evading, or obstructing an officer.
