The Tragic Incident at Owasso High School

The untimely death of Nex Benedict has rocked the community of Owasso High School, with family members attributing the tragic loss to bullying. The 16-year-old, who identified as non-binary and used they/them pronouns, passed away a day after a fight that took place inside a girls’ toilet.

Despite the heartbreaking circumstances surrounding Nex’s death, police in the Tulsa suburb have not released a cause of death. It has been clarified that the pupil did not die as a result of injuries sustained during the altercation that occurred on February 8.

Investigation by the Department of Education

The Department of Education’s Office For Civil Rights has launched an investigation into Owasso Public Schools regarding their handling of alleged harassment. The investigation was prompted by a letter addressed to the Human Rights Campaign, which highlighted concerns about the school’s response to sex-based harassment.

Owasso Public Schools has since responded to the allegations, refuting them as unsupported and without merit. The district has expressed its commitment to cooperating with federal officials during the investigation.

A Call for Justice

Following Nex’s passing, a walkout and candlelight vigil were held in their memory. Human Rights Campaign president Kelley Robinson has called for urgent action to ensure justice for Nex and to create a safe environment for all students at Owasso High School and beyond.

Nex’s mother, Sue Benedict, has spoken out about the physical injuries sustained by the teenager during the fight, involving a transgender pupil and three older girls. The school district has confirmed that the altercation was swiftly broken up by other students and a staff member.

As the community mourns the loss of Nex Benedict, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding their death continues. It is a poignant reminder of the importance of addressing bullying and harassment in educational settings to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
