Armed Suspect Identified in Modesto Police Shooting Incident

Last month in Modesto, California, police officers were involved in a dangerous situation that led to the shooting of an armed suspect. The incident took place at the intersection of Paradise Road and S. Martin Luther King Drive, where an officer pulled over a vehicle at around 10 a.m.

Details of the Incident

Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer made contact with the driver, a woman, and her passenger, later identified as 41-year-old Mark Coke Jr. The officer requested identification from both individuals, and while the driver provided hers, Coke verbally identified himself. However, upon verifying his identity, it was discovered that the information provided by Coke did not match the records on file.

Backup was called to the scene, and as officers attempted to learn Coke’s true identity, he became uncooperative. Despite being asked to exit the vehicle, Coke began behaving suspiciously and refused to comply with the officers’ instructions. When one of the officers tried to control Coke’s arm, he brandished a gun in the direction of the officers.

Police Response

Fearing for their safety, the officers fired their weapons at the suspect as they retreated to a safe distance. One officer even deployed his taser before resorting to his firearm. Additional units were called for assistance, including the deployment of a ballistic shield to protect the officers.

Once the situation was under control, officers approached Coke, recovered a loaded 9mm Ruger firearm, and provided him with medical aid. It was later revealed that Coke had a history of criminal activity, including an outstanding domestic violence warrant.

Charges

As a result of the incident, Mark Coke Jr. will face multiple charges, including attempted murder of a police officer, felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The swift and decisive action taken by the officers prevented a potentially dangerous situation from escalating further.
