Police launch manhunt in El Cajon, California after shooting at dentist’s office leaves one dead, two injured. Gun violence incidents underscore debate on US gun regulations

Manhunt Launched in El Cajon Following Deadly Shooting

A manhunt was launched by police in the American city of El Cajon on Thursday after a tragic shooting at a dentist’s office left one person dead and two others injured, according to reports from local media.

El Cajon, located approximately 30 kilometers outside of San Diego, became the center of a police search for an armed and dangerous 29-year-old suspect who fled the scene following what authorities described as an active shooter incident.

The two individuals who sustained injuries were promptly transported to a nearby hospital and were reported to be in stable condition, as per a statement from local California TV station KUSI. It remains unclear whether the assailant had any prior connection to the victims.

Gun violence is a prevalent issue in the United States, where the number of firearms exceeds the population, with approximately one-third of adults owning a gun.

Public opinion polls indicate that a majority of Americans support stricter gun regulations in principle. However, the influential firearms lobby and a well-organized voter base advocating for robust gun rights have consistently hindered legislative action in Congress.

El Cajon Police provided details of the incident, stating, “This was an active shooter event with at least three victims. We are searching for a light-skinned male, aged between 20-30, dressed in all black attire. The suspect fled the scene in a white U-Haul pickup truck with Arizona license plate AM14894, last seen heading northbound on N Mollison.”

The US Supreme Court recently deliberated on the legality of “bump stocks,” simple devices that enable rapid firing from semi-automatic firearms. The case stems from the deadliest mass shooting in US history in October 2017, where a gunman opened fire on a crowd at an outdoor music concert in Las Vegas, resulting in 58 fatalities and around 500 injuries.
