The Tragic Tree Trimming Incident in Escambia County

In a heartbreaking turn of events, 59-year-old David Owen, a dedicated Escambia County employee, lost his life during a tree trimming incident on Monday. The incident occurred at the intersection of Detroit Boulevard and Cove Avenue, where Owen, an equipment operator III for the Public Works Department, was carrying out his duties.

A Dedicated County Employee

Owen had been a loyal employee of Escambia County for nearly 25 years, where he was known for his commitment to his job. Colleagues described him as someone who took immense pride in his work, often arriving as early as 3:30 a.m. to ensure that everything was in order for the day ahead. He would start his coworkers’ computers, prepare their vehicles, and make sure all keys were ready to go.

The Tragic Incident

According to reports from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded as workers were trimming a tree when it swung unexpectedly and struck the boom arm of a truck. Owen was knocked from the bucket he was working in, and despite the swift response of EMS, he tragically lost his life at the scene.

Remembering David Owen

A visitation for Owen has been scheduled for March 7 at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home, where friends, family, and colleagues will pay their respects. The funeral service will follow, with interment at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens.
