Major Fentanyl Seizure at San Ysidro Port of Entry

In a significant bust, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro Port of Entry intercepted over $11 million worth of fentanyl from a vehicle on Sunday night. The incident unfolded when a CBP K-9 unit flagged a 37-year-old man driving into the U.S.

Discovery of the Narcotics

Upon initial inspection, the canine unit alerted officers to the glove compartment area, indicating the presence of illegal substances. The driver and the vehicle were then directed to undergo a thorough secondary inspection, where officers uncovered 100 packages containing blue pills hidden within the car’s dashboard and front seats.

Identification of Fentanyl

Subsequent testing confirmed that the contents of the packages were indeed fentanyl, a potent and dangerous synthetic opioid. An estimated total of 561,000 pills, weighing 123.6 pounds, were seized with an approximate street value of $11,220,000.

CBP Response

Mariza Marin, Port Director for the San Ysidro Port of Entry, emphasised the severity of the situation, stating, “Fentanyl is a very lethal drug that continues to be encountered along our southern border. I’m very proud of the exceptional work by our officers who skillfully interdict illicit narcotics on a daily basis.”

Legal Action Taken

Following the seizure, the driver was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations for further action. The narcotics and the vehicle were confiscated by CBP officers as part of the ongoing effort to combat drug trafficking at the border.
