Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Man Dies After Falling From U.S.-Mexico Border Fence

A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday when a man fell from the U.S.-Mexico border fence in an area west of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry. The man, believed to be 29 years old and a resident of Mexico, was part of a small group crossing the border on foot when the incident took place.

The man was attempting to climb the border wall when he fell to the ground on the U.S. side on Tuesday morning. U.S. Border Patrol agents were quick to respond, providing assistance and calling for emergency medical services. Despite efforts by paramedics to save him, the man tragically passed away at the scene.

Increased Border Wall Injuries and Deaths

Since the Trump administration began replacing border barriers in the region with taller, 30-foot bollard-style fencing, the number of injuries and deaths, particularly from falls, has significantly increased. UC San Diego Health reported treating 59 patients for border wall falls in 2019, a number that rose to 449 just two years later.

Dr. Joseph Ciacci, a neurosurgeon at UC San Diego Health, highlighted the alarming trend, noting a five-fold increase in trauma cases since the wall’s height was raised. He has observed a rise in severe injuries such as spine and traumatic brain injuries, as well as cerebrovascular injuries that require surgery.

Mexican Nationals Facing Risks

According to data from the Mexican Consulate in San Diego, in 2023, 29 Mexican nationals lost their lives and 120 were injured while attempting to cross the border in the San Diego region. The primary causes of these incidents include injuries related to the border wall, drowning, dehydration, or other illnesses.

Advocate Adriana Jasso, who provides aid to migrants in the border area, shared that they witness two to four emergencies daily. The tragic loss of life in this recent incident once again highlights the dangers faced by individuals seeking to cross the border.

Review by U.S. Customs and Border Protection

Following any death at the border, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility conducts a thorough review of the incident. This process ensures accountability and transparency in handling such sensitive matters.
