Greenbrier, Tennessee: Woman Leads Police on Tense Chase and Standoff with Nashville Authorities

In the quaint town of Greenbrier, Tennessee, a routine traffic stop quickly escalated into a heart-pounding chase that culminated in a dramatic standoff with Nashville authorities. The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday, Feb. 28, left both law enforcement officers and civilians on edge as a woman evaded police and put lives at risk.

The Initial Traffic Stop

It all began around 9:45 a.m. when Greenbrier police pulled over 41-year-old Shamika Jones, a Nashville resident, for her window tint. However, what started as a minor violation took a dangerous turn when officers detected the strong odor of marijuana emanating from her vehicle.

Lieutenant Curt Allen of the Greenbrier Police Department recounted the moment when the situation escalated. “He notices a smell of marijuana coming out of the vehicle, he questions the driver about the odor of marijuana and asks her if there was marijuana in the vehicle, and she said there was and that she had planned on smoking the marijuana. He advised this would give him probable cause to search the vehicle,” Allen explained.

The Intense Chase

Seconds later, body camera footage captured the harrowing moment when Jones suddenly sped off, narrowly missing an officer and sending the situation into chaos. “As you see, it pushes him out into the parking lot. They both turn and run to their vehicles and that’s when the pursuit begins,” Allen described the heart-stopping chase that ensued.

Despite efforts to apprehend Jones, the pursuit was eventually called off in Springfield after she drove into oncoming traffic, posing a significant danger to herself and others on the road.

The Standoff and Arrest

Following the reckless actions of Jones, Greenbrier police obtained felony warrants for her arrest on charges of reckless endangerment and evading arrest. Hours later, in South Nashville, Metro officers located Jones and attempted to apprehend her.

However, Jones refused to surrender peacefully and engaged in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with law enforcement. She even resorted to hitting police vehicles and evading capture, with her passenger, 21-year-old Jonathan Cornish, firing shots at pursuing officers.

After a high-stakes pursuit, Jones’ vehicle was disabled in Antioch, leading to a tense standoff that lasted over an hour. Eventually, both suspects surrendered to authorities, with Cornish now facing charges of attempted criminal homicide.

The Legal Ramifications

As the dust settled on the chaotic events that transpired, Jones, also known as Shamika Joanne Cornish, found herself behind bars facing a slew of serious charges. From felony aggravated assault to evading arrest, her actions have landed her in the Correctional Development Center for Females on a hefty $220,000 bond.

The residents of Greenbrier, Tennessee, and the surrounding areas can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that these dangerous individuals are off the streets and facing the consequences of their reckless actions.
